Apple iPhone 4S 32GB (Black) - Sim Free

Fabian Sasson There are three iPhones: 3GS, 4 and 4S. The 3GS is almost three years old, its screen is lower resolution than the 4/4S which makes small text harder to read. It also has a poor camera. The 4S has the best camera on any phone (8MP vs the 4's 5MP), it's also has the voice assistant Siri which is novel, but not a deal breaker. The 4S runs the software on the phone (iOS) faster which makes it seem more responsive. If you're buying a phone on a two year contract get the latest the iPhone 4S.

I agree, the iPhone 4S is your best bet on contract these days. Some users found the battery life to be slightly worse than the previous generation (iPhone 4), but it still manages a day on a full charge. Also, Apple has a fix in the works, so expect the situation to improve in the future.
Adam Borocz Another thing to consider is how you're planning to use it, which will help in deciding how much storage you need: Do you have a music collection that you want to carry around and listen to? Do you plan to play those fancy 3D games (they take up a lot of space!)? If you're not sure, the 32GB iPhone above is a good sweet spot, but otherwise you might be able to save some money if you know you won't need all that space.

On storage I saved money by getting the 16Gb iPad, and I've never got near to using that, even though I have >50Gb of music and ridiculous amounts of photos / videos. I just transfer stuff around as I need it. iCloud makes that all much easier anyway.
