Well I have slept on both a memory mattress and a memory mattress topper. I found them both really comfortable but i preferred the mattress topper. This is actually cheaper at about £80+ and I prefer it because the foam mattress (about £300) is quite squidgy and has no solidness to it whereas the topper goes on top of a normal mattress so is more comfortable.
I don't think they are a waste of money at all but it's worth testing one out in a shop before you buy it! I love mine!
